RIP Corey Haim

Former teen idol Corey Haim died at his home yesterday of a drug overdose. He was 38. The actor had waged a very public battle with addiction over the past quarter-century, but Haim had recently decided to make a comeback attempt.

At the time of his death, he had completed several new movies and was reportedly enjoying being back at work. He’ll be best remembered for cult-classics ‘Lucas‘ and ‘The Lost Boys,’ as well as for a string of popular teen comedies including ‘License to Drive’ in which he co-starred alongside real-life friend Corey Feldman.

Are you a Bank of America customer? If so, you will no longer be subject to debit card overdraft fees. The bank announced yesterday that the fees will end this summer, but be forewarned: once the policy is in effect, your card will be declined if you attempt to make a purchase and you don’t have funds to cover it. This might be a great time to look into a new account with overdraft protection.

Bigelow’s Big Night

Sunday was Oscar’s big night, and the stars turned out in force for the festivities. The much-anticipated showdown between ex-spouses James Cameron and Kathryn Bigelow ended with a decisive win for Bigelow. Her film ‘The Hurt Locker’ took home six awards including the night’s two biggest honors for Best Picture and Best Director. This is the first time a woman has earned top honors for directing. Congrats, Kathryn!

The Academy Awards is traditionally a time to remember those who have passed on in the previous year, and this year legendary director John Hughes received a touching tribute. James Taylor played ‘In My Life’ to accompany the main tribute montage, but one notable actress was notably absent. Farrah Fawcett, star of ‘Extremeties’ and ‘The Cannonball Run,’ was not remembered by the Academy. Did you watch the Oscars? Did you think there were other snubs?

Awards season is often a time for stars to show off their latest nips and tucks, but a group of six New Jersey women discovered the hard way that not all plastic surgery will deliver that red carpet look. All of the women sought the help of one man for their butt augmentation procedures; unfortunately for them, it turned out that he wasn’t really a doctor. The combination of silicon, petroleum jelly and household caulk used in the procedure caused adverse health effects in the women, all of whom are now recovering. Want to find out more about cosmetic procedures? Check out our list – and be sure to check your doctor’s credentials!

Bills piling up? Consider P2P Loans

Looking for a way to eliminate credit card debt? In years past, many people turned to banks to get personal loans, but as consumer credit has gotten harder to come by, a clever new service has cropped up to fill this market void. Peer to peer loan services such as Prosper and Lending Club help pair individual lenders with prospective borrowers to mutual benefit: lenders get a good rate of return for their investments (funds can even be directed into an IRA) and borrowers may be able to get more favorable loan terms than those offered by banks.

As with a bank loan, borrowers must meet standards of creditworthiness (including a minimum credit score) before they are approved for loans, and lenders have the opportunity to review each individual’s loan request and profile before deciding to fund part or all of the loan. If there are multiple lenders, the borrower makes one payment to the service which then splits it among the various lenders.

In additional to personal loans, peer to peer services also offer options for student loan consolidation and business loans, most with a 3 year repayment term. What do you think: would you try peer to peer lending?
